A Summer Break in the North Pennines At Mellwaters Barn Cottages
13/07/2026

When most people think of a countryside escape, Summer is the season that comes to mind first. Long evenings, wildflower meadows, waterfalls in full flow, and the kind of unhurried days that remind you what time off from everyday is actually for.

The North Pennines in Summer delivers all of this and then some. If you're considering a break at Mellwaters Barn between June and September, here's what's waiting for you.

The Landscape At Its Most Alive

Summer in the North Pennines is a genuinely special thing. The moorland that looks stark and dramatic in winter transforms into something altogether softer. The heather beginning to purple the hillsides, hay meadows full of wildflowers, and the rivers running clear through our deep green valleys.

The area is a haven for bird and wildlife watchers, with great numbers of wading bird species on the high moors in spring and summer. If you're a wildlife watcher, early mornings in Summer here are extraordinary.

Upper Teesdale is the only place in the UK where you might find the Blue Gentian flower, a reminder that this landscape isn't just beautiful, it's botanically remarkable. The stretch of Teesdale between Bowlees and High Force contains over 200 plant species in a relatively short walk.

High Force and the Teesdale Waterfalls

Summer is peak season for visiting the Teesdale waterfalls, and with good reason. High Force is one of England's most impressive waterfalls. The River Tees plunges 21 metres over a rocky ledge, creating a spectacular sight that has shaped the landscape for thousands of years.

The Bowlees Visitor Centre is the perfect starting point. It's a former Methodist chapel converted into a gateway centre for Upper Teesdale, with displays, nature activities, informed staff, a gift shop and café, and easy access to both Low Force and High Force.

From Mellwaters Barn, this is an easy half-day trip that most guests make at least once during their stay. Go on a weekday morning if you can when the falls are at their most peaceful before the Summer crowds arrive.

Walking the Pennine Way and the Roof of England

The Pennine Way passes close to our cottages and summer is when the trail really comes into its own. The days are long and the views from the high moors stretch for miles.

A brand new multi-day circular route - the Roof of England Walk - launched in 2025, takes in the spectacular waterfalls of Teesdale, the dramatic river gorge at Allen Banks in Northumberland, and the highest point of the North Pennines at Cross Fell. It's an exciting addition to the walking options in the area and puts Mellwaters Barn right at the heart of a genuinely world-class walking destination.

For those who prefer a gentler day out on foot, the Tees Railway Path runs through the picturesque villages of Mickleton and Romaldkirk to Cotherstone . It's a mostly flat, well-surfaced route that follows a former railway line through beautiful Teesdale countryside. Ideal if you're walking with children, or simply want a more relaxed day in the fresh air.

Barnard Castle in Summer

Barnard Castle is at its best in Summer. The market town is lively without being overrun, with plenty of the outdoor seating at the cafés and pubs  and the monthly farmers' market on the Market Place cobbles is worth timing your stay around.

Locally produced food can be found in the independent butchers, greengrocers, bakers and specialist shops. It's the kind of town where a morning's wander and a long lunch can happily take up half a day.

The Bowes Museum is minutes from Mellwaters by car, with its extraordinary collection and beautiful parkland grounds that are particularly lovely in Summer.

The ruins of Barnard Castle itself set high above the River Tees offer some of the best views in the area on a clear day.

Day Trips Further Afield

One of the great advantages of Mellwaters Barn's location is how much is within easy reach for day trips. Kynren is an epic outdoor night show in Bishop Auckland which takes place every Saturday throughout the Summer and is an unforgettable experience, particularly for families. It's worth booking in advance as tickets sell out early in the season.

Further afield, Durham City is about an hour's drive and makes a wonderful Summer day out with the cathedral, the riverside walks, and the independent shops and restaurants all at their best in warm weather. The Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District are also within comfortable day trip distance for those who want to explore a little wider.

Practical Things to Know for a Summer Stay

Book early - Summer is the most popular time of year and availability at Mellwaters Barn fills quickly, especially for the school holiday weeks in July and August. If you have specific dates in mind, don't leave it too late.

Minimum stays - New for 2026, Robin and Wren Cottages are now available for one-night stays - a game changer if you're walking the Pennine Way or the Roof of England and need a genuinely comfortable, accessible base for a night rather than pitching a tent or squeezing into a bunkhouse.

You can now also pre-order your choice of tasty pub grub from the local pub when you book and we'll have it  waiting in the fridge ready to heat up when you arrive. Sleep in a proper bed, wake up refreshed, and head out the next morning ready for whatever the Pennines throws at you.

Blue Tit and Kingfisher Cottage remain available on a three-night minimum for those wanting a longer stay.

The evenings are long - Sunset in the North Pennines in midsummer can be as late as 10pm. The views from the cottages across the valley in the evening light are something you'll remember long after you've gone home.

The midges are real - We say this with affection. If you're planning to sit outside on calm summer evenings, come prepared. It's a small price to pay for everything else.
